Peter Johnstone is a prodigiously talented pianist and keyboards player. The winner of the Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year title in 2012, he has gone on to international acclaim through his work with the award-winning quartet Square One and with saxophonist Tommy Smith’s ‘Coltrane’ quartet. He has also played in a duo with Smith and is currently the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra’s resident pianist, featuring alongside top international names including the sensational vocalists Jazzmeia Horn and Kurt Elling.

Peter also leads his own piano trio, plays organ in both the Paul Towndrow Trio and Prime Trio, and has recorded and toured with saxophonists Andy Middleton and Harben Kay, playing in duo with Kay and expanding Kay’s KIM Trio into a quartet.

In October 2023, Peter toured in the UK with a new group, the Peter Johnstone International Organ Quartet featuring New York-based vibes virtuoso Joe Locke, saxophonist Tommy Smith, drummer Alyn Cosker and Peter himself on Hammond organ. During the tour the quartet recorded an album, Resistance Is Futile, which is due for release in July 2025. The quartet, with Will Vinson replacing Tommy Smith on saxophone, plays a series concerts to coincide with the album’s release.
