Tommy Smith

Tommy Smith is one of the world’s leading saxophonists. A presence on the international jazz scene since his teenage years with vibes master Gary Burton, Smith has created a major body of work as a composer and recording artist and continues to tour with Norwegian bass legend Arild Andersen as well as featuring in a variety of his own projects.

Tommy’s most recent album, Eternal Light, was recorded live at the Queen’s Hall in Edinburgh with the piano virtuoso Gwilym Simcock. It has received enthusiastic reviews from Tommy and Gwilym’s fellow musicians, including guitarist John McLaughlin, vibes virtuoso Gary Burton and vocalist Kurt Elling, and from JazzViews, whose reviewer heard “a remarkable performance in which Gwilym and Tommy push each other to the limits of invention but always with their innate sense of melody and lyricism very much to the fore.”

Tommy has also recorded in duo with pianist John Taylor and the albums he recorded in New York with trios led by pianist Kenny Barron, Sound of Love and Spartacus, are regarded as career highlights. The range of his output is illustrated by the two solo albums, Solow and Into Silence, contrasted with Modern Jacobite, which he recorded with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
